Note: On two further selections on this album, Till there was you, and Standing on the corner there is no aural evidence for the vibraphone, and on these, unlike the selections above, there are guitar fills or solo playing. Possibly the music comes from two sessions, especially as the sleeve note mentions the two guitarists alternating. Perhaps it is Burrell who solos, and Lowe on the selections with Costa, but there isn't much to go on.

a. Blues over easy pt.1 on DLP 9003
b. Blues over easy pt.2 7:55

Recorded May 16th 1958, N.Y.C.

The only aural evidence for Costa's presence here is the group of notes over the ensemble at beginning of part 2. The sleeve note of DLP 3188 explains that these two tracks are both edited from the long riffs-and-solos jam which ended the concert. Neither sleeve note mentions Costa at all: evidence for his presence - alluded to in Jepsen and subsequent discographies - seems to spring from a review of the concert in Down Beat (26th June 1958, p.34). If the full tape of all 28 minutes of this number exists it should contain Costa's solo: the portions issued on these two LPs do not.

Recorded September 26th and October 6th 1958, Hackensack, NJ

Note: Rüppli's Savoy discography mentions two dates, with varying line-ups, for this record; and on aural evidence there is some need to amend the original sleeve note. However:
a. (pace Rüppli, there is no aural evidence for a vibraphone on any selection: this agrees with the original sleeve note.
b. Confusing Granville T Hogan and Wilbur Hogan is not unknown, but here the preference must be for Wilbur, firstly because he is mentioned on the original sleeve, and secondly because Dennard and he were both with Lionel Hampton at the time.
c. It is tempting to divide the selections between a Costa/Jones and a Dennard/Hogan rhythm team. I cannot distinguish aurally between Philly Joe Jones and Wilbur Hogan, nor between selections with one trumpet, and those with two.
The only piano solos (on Blu-shout and Joybox) are both definitely Costa.

Swing trumpet kings - Verve 230444 [CD]

Harry Edison, Buck Clayton, tp; Jimmy Forrest, ts; Eddie Costa, vb; Jimmy Jones, p; Freddy Greene, g; Joe Benjamin, b; Charlie Persip, d.

a. 22507 Critic's delight 6:46

Recorded October 16th 1958, N.Y.C.

Note:
A very simple vibes part can be heard in the ensembles which start and finish this piece. According to Bob Weir's discography of Buck Clayton, this part was overdubbed later by Costa. G. E. Lambert's review in Jazz Monthly, attributes the vibes to Persip. Both are possible on aural evidence, but Weir's is the more plausible (because it hardly seems worthwhile to set up a vibraphone just to play these few notes on the session). In any event this album is of marginal Costa interest, though generally an unexceptionable mainstream small-group set.

Everest SD 3009
World Record Club(UK) SCM 23 "Stravinsky - Petrouchka / Ebony Concerto"

Note: Not a jazz performance, being scored throughout. The possible personnel is given by Bruyninckx, and Kriebel’s biography of Herman (p.169) mentions this recording being made about the same time as the new version of Summer sequence, see below. A piano can be heard, but if Elliott Lawrence was called in for this recording, it was presumably to play the piano score.
