More immortal performances - Archive of Jazz AJ 508

Mundell Lowe, g; others unknown

a. Moon River
b. Leave Me Alone

Recorded late 1961

Equivalent issues:

Little information is apparently available from the sleeve, (Bruyninckx says poss. same or similar personnel to the sessions which made the Satan in high heels album. The remainder of this album, according to Jazz records - the specialist labels By Ralph Laing and Chris Sheridan. 1981, consists of 2 Lowe tracks from the "Satan" album (not 5 as in Bruyninckx) and 8 tracks by other artists from the Charlie Parker label. It seems possible that these two performance are from other albums from this label featuring Lowe. Moon river appears on the album by Kevin Gavin and Leave me alone on an album (Charlie Parker PLP 811) by Alice Darr. In some sources the name of the label is Archives of Jazz. Help in resolving this muddle would be welcome.

Note: There is some aural evidence of splicing or similar intervention. The sleeve note describes the two instrumentations above, without assigning selections to either. Here they are assigned following aural evidence. [Both Jepsen and Bruyninckx assign them incorrectly.] But the first and last selections pose problems. The opening "Prayer" is clearly by the group with strings, but segues, via a two-bar passage by Fuller's trombone alone, into "Taking a chance on love" by the brass group. The final "Love me tomorrow" by the brass group appears to have a few bars with strings overlaid, and segues into "Prayer" as a coda, also by the brass group.
There are no solos clearly identifiable as by Costa: a vibraphone is audible on all the selections with strings, but, from the brass date, only on "Love me tomorrow" and briefly there. Most selections from the brass date have brief piano solos, which sound like Jones. The sleeve note mentions Costa playing "percussion" [not vibraphone as such], and suggests that both Jones and Costa play piano with the brass group, not impossible but unlikely. Other than the vibraphone, the only percussion instrument audible (other than a normal drum kit) is tubular bells heard briefly on one strings selection, and in the "Prayer" coda. Thus there is very little aural evidence for Costa's presence on the brass date at all. But I could be wrong about the piano solos.

Note: A misattributed session. Raben v.5 includes this from a Carnegie Hall concert, with this recording date: it looks to be a simple error, arising from details given with the GM issue. The Bielefelder Katalog for 1993, detailing the Enja issue, gives Warren Chiasson as the vibraphonist.
